Bálint Balassi

Bálint Balassi
Bálint Balassi was a Hungarian poet (1554 – 1594). First great poet in the Hungarian language. Lived an eventful life as a soldier and died of wounds sustained in battle. His poetry, influenced by Western, especially Italian, influences, retains the language and rhythmic modes of folk poetry, from whose elements Balassi also drew a stanza that bears his name. Of his works only the religious ones were published during his lifetime; the edition of love songs and poems inspired by military life is posthumous.
