Jacques Lipchitz (1891-1973) was a Lithuanian sculptor naturalized French. He studied in Paris, where he made the principles of cubism his own and developed innovative experiments in abstract forms; later his style took on more dynamic tones, manifesting surrealist tendencies.
After studying engineering in Vilnius, he moved to Paris in 1909, where, through attendance at the École des beaux-arts and the Académie Julian and with assiduous visits to the Louvre, he acquired a solid classical education; he was also in contact with the fervent Parisian artistic community and in particular with some of the most significant personalities of the time, including P. Picasso, J. Gris, and A. Modigliani. During World War II, with the occupation of France by the Germans, Lipchitz from a Jewish family, left the country and moved the United States (1941). Returning to Europe in 1963, he also spent long periods in Italy.
