Michał Tyszkiewicz

Michał Tyszkiewicz (1828–1897) was an outstanding collector of antiquities and a pioneer of Polish excavations in Egypt, conducted in late 1861 and early 1862. His name is today engraved in the Apollo Rotunda in the Louvre Museum among the major donors. In 1865, Tyszkiewicz permanently settled in Rome, where he conducted archaeological excavations until 1870. He collected ancient gemstones, numismatics, ceramics, silverware, gold jewelry, and bronze and marble sculptures. His collections were among the more valuable European collections that were formed in the 2nd half of the 19th century.
